In this bike check, YouTube's how-to guru of bicycle repair introduces us to an American bike named for a bird of prey. Merlin titanium bicycles are made in the USA, and this one was built in the Boston area some moons ago just outside Everette MA. "This one here is an older bicycle, it is full Shimano nine-speed Ultegra, with Maavic hub helium and rims, pretty nice looking, (with a) radially spoked front wheel," he says, noting the "..rear wheel has cross on one side and radially spoked on non-drive side. Something let loose in the hub (and that's why it's) in for repair," he explained. "The big thing about this is the after-market power crank on it. As you can see, (the crank arms) are both in the same position, and they work independently of one another, so you can pedal one side, or you can pedal it both two ways, or you could pedal it...really, the purpose of the power crank is that it trains you to pull up on the back stroke. The crank arms are not connected, so really you have to pull up in order to push down. Takes a little getting used to, to say the least." he explains. "This bicycle came into us - it hasn't been on the road in about three years. He's (the owner) pulling it out of the cobwebs, you know, hey he had different thingsg oing on in his life. He got married, he had a kid, you know, all of that kinda good stuff. he grew up, we've all gotta grow up sooner or later. Not if I can help it, damn it." Continuing his commentary, BikemanforU notes, "So, here it is, we're doing a little tune up. Has a carbon fiber fork. Dura Ace headset, Triple T on the handlebar, that nice Medolo bend gives you a nice flat spot when you're cruising. Shifter's a little screwed up. Somebody asked me about STI shifters, the brake and shift lever all-in-one. and when it skips like this. We'll see what happens. This guy's ridden this thing and ridden it pretty hard. You can tell by the wear on the brake hoods."
