Donations sought for surgery of lost dog, likely hit by car

By: Kyle Rogers MECHANICSBURG, Pa. -- An emaciated dog found along the side of the road will have surgery while the search for his owner continues. On March 24th, the 2 to 3 year old hound mix was found in a grassy area in front of the Bobby Rahal Acura on the Carlisle Pike in Cumberland County. A woman driving by saw the dog and when she realized he was still alive, called for a veterinarian for help. Dr. Renee Richards of the Willlow Mill Veterinary Hospital said the dog, who they named Bobby Ray, was badly injured. After X-rays were performed, the veterinarians found gravel and stones in the dog's stomach. There were also signs of frostbite which suggest the animal had been on the run for several weeks, if not months. "He's social with people and I think he has any owner somewhere," said Dr. Richards. On Facebook, a missing and found pet page titled "FIND TOBY IN PA" posted Bobby Ray's picture in the hopes that somebody will come forward with information about the dog's owner. The dog had a collar on upon arrival, but Richards could not say if he had been abandoned or was simply lost. "He's a fighter," said Richards. "As a young dog and as debilitated as he was, he is a fighter and he has come a long, long way in six days," she said. Bobby Ray's vet bills will likely soar past the $7,000 estimate and so far donations are covering the costs since an owner has not been identified. Richards said the Willow Mill Animal Hospital is taking money out of its Good Samaritan fund but she's hopeful others donating can help, too. A fund has been established through any Members First Credit Union branch in the area with reference to the Willow Mill Animal Hospital c/o Bobby Ray. Donations can also be made to the hospital itself at 11 Willow Mill Park Road, Mechanicsburg, Pa. 17050. Bobby Ray will have surgery on his leg on Tuesday. Richards said she is optimistic about his recovery.
