When I first started emailing my list, I copied what I saw all the big brands do. I used their same language. I talked to my list the same way I saw the big brands talk to me. Why this matters for you is because of how Gmail shows your emails that you send to your customers in their inboxes. Gmail splits up all emails into different tabs and if you copy the big boys your email will most likely end up in the graveyard also known as the Promotions tab. The best way I've found to avoid this from happening is to decrease the number of images, links and most importantly talk to your list like a friend sending an email. So if you want to use a tool to test where your emails will end up, check out http://trafficandsales.com/litmus . It'll forward you to a tool where you can send your email and test which Gmail tab it'll appear in.
